Betty: This seems wrong, so wrong.
Maribelle: Where else am I going to get birds?
Betty: I’m not sure, but I don’t think the guardian is going to like chicks.
Maribelle: Look, the feed store has plenty of them and they will just grow into chickens that we eat.
Betty: But my mom taught me to not harm the innocent.
Maribelle: Yeah so does the Bible but you see how people in this town are.
Door entry chime
Betty: You got me there I guess. Look-
Eleanor: Maribelle hey!
Maribelle: Oh hey Eleanor. Betty this is Eleanor, Eleanor this is Betty.
Eleanor: Pleasure to meet ya!
Betty: Pleasures all mine.
Eleanor: What brings y’all to the feed store?
Maribelle: Just buying some chicks.
Eleanor: Oh what for?
Betty: My mom wants to raise them as pets. You know since they are so small and cute and wouldn’t hurt a fly.
Maribelle: Right, but she also knows they will grow up and not be so cute anymore.
Betty: Not if we raise them right.
Eleanor: I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say they ain’t for ya mama.
Betty/Maribelle: Yes they are/There for the guardian
Eleanor: Oh the guardian. Ain’t that a little dark?
Maribelle: It called me on the phone and told me if I want to find Penny I need to do this.
Betty: I think she’s crazy. She’s my best friend so I’m trying to be supportive, but this is way out of my wheelhouse.
Eleanor: Well, Daddy is gonna kill some of our chickens today so we can trade them with our neighbor. If you don’t want to do the killin’, I can just take one. I think Greta is big enough to make one of those circles.
Betty: That’s not a bad idea at all.
Maribelle: Yeah, that’s super great Eleanor. Meet us tonight at midnight behind my house. You’ll need to park on the street behind mine and walk through the creek a little bit to get to my back fence.
Eleanor: Okay I’ll see you there.
Time laps music
Betty: I can’t believe we’re doing this.
Maribelle: My parents are going to kill me.
Betty: Or blame me.
Maribelle: Or both; they will probably do both.
Foot steps
Eleanor: Hey, I got Greta.
Betty/Maribelle: May she Rest In Peace
Eleanor: Uh what?
Betty: It just make me feel better.
Eleanor: Well I got Greta, also I chopped her up so we’re ready to set her in a circle.
Betty: Gross….was she already dead?
Eleanor: Yes. She was also killed humanely. Daddy’s a good man.
Betty: I didn’t...sorry the whole thing rubs me the wrong way.
Eleanor: And that’s why your saying may she Rest In Peace.
Maribelle: Okay the lights are out in the house let’s get going.
Soft footsteps and whispers
Betty: Gross, oh my goddess are there still feathers on this thing?
Eleanor: That’s how the guardian likes their birds.
Betty: How do you know that?
Maribelle: It’s just a guess now help me with this.
Betty: Ew...gross...yuck
Eleanor: That looks right don't ya think?
Maribelle: Yeah I think so.
Betty: I really need to wash my hands. I’ll wait for you by the creek.
Footsteps
Maribelle: I hope it comes tonight.
Eleanor: I’m sure they will.
Maribelle: The lightning bugs sure do like you.
Eleanor: It’s cuz I’m as sweet as apple pie.
Soft chuckled
Maribelle: I hope this makes the Guardian happy. I miss Penny so much. Heck, I got kicked out of my house for her.
Eleanor: You seem to really love her. I wish I loved someone the way you do.
Maribelle: Anyone at school you have a crush on?
Eleanor: No, I don’t like most people. It’s funny that way.
Maribelle: Maybe you’ll meet someone in college. That would be cute don’t you think? Are you going to college around here?
Eleanor: Maybe, I’m still not sure. What about you?
Maribelle: Yeah, there’s a college in the main town that I got accepted into. I just gotta get through this next month and I’ll be home free.
Eleanor: Are you going to move?
Maribelle: Betty and I are thinking about it.
Eleanor: That will be good. I’m sure you’ll love it.
Maribelle: Yeah...come on let’s go before my parents wake up for something silly and catch us.
