Maribelle: Two weeks. I haven’t heard from the Guardian in two weeks. I can’t keep living at home like this.
Betty: I keep telling you just to stay here.
Maribelle: What if it calls and I’m not home. What if it calls and by not answering or being home we never get Penny back.
Betty: Have you considered what happens if we don’t get her back at all.
Maribelle: Shut up.
Betty: I’m just saying...we need to be prepared for if this doesn’t work out.
Maribelle: It’s going to work out. It has to work out.
Silence
Betty: I was talking to my mom about the Guardian and as much as we want to believe it’s real...I’m starting to think it’s not.
Maribelle: Then who's on the phone? How do they know so much about me?
Betty: A stalker?
Maribelle: I can’t believe you. I can’t believe what you’re saying right now. Don’t you know that if this doesn’t work it means that Penny is gone forever. No more impromptu trips to Houston. No more November Galveston trips. It’s just you and me and our boring, no fun lives.
Betty: Maribelle, we need to start focusing on College.
Maribelle: I already got in, what’s left for us to do?
Betty: Well, we do have our apartment to think about...I want to take some summer classes so I want to move pretty soon once we graduate.
Maribelle: Why are you telling me this now? I need to stay here until we get Penny back.
Betty: Listen to yourself. You sound crazy.
Maribelle: You’re the crazy one. If you think, for one second, I’m giving up. Then...then...then maybe we shouldn’t be friends!
Betty: Maribelle, please just calm down. I don’t think you’re going to give up and that’s my worry.
Maribelle: What, are you worried that I’ll ruin your plans to finally leave this town? Is that what this is?
Betty: Maribelle you know it’s not. This is a “maybe we need to move on” thing.
Maribelle: I will not! I will not move on because her parents haven’t moved on. I will not move on because the police have. Someone has to keep looking. Someone has to find her! Some-
Betty: What if she’s dead!
Silence
Betty: What then Maribelle? Have you ever stopped for one second to think about that?
Maribelle: Fuck you!
Footsteps
Betty: Don’t let the door hit you on your way out!
Door slams
Betty: Childish completely and utterly childish!
Phone rings.
Betty: Now what….
Footsteps and phone ringing
Betty: Hello, Collins residence.
Guardian: Hello Betty.
Betty: Who is this?
Guardian: I have had many names but you and Maribelle refer to me as the Guardian.
Betty: D-Did you want to speak to Maribelle. She’s...she’s not here.
Guardian: You and I both know where she is.
Betty: What do you want?
Guardian: I want to talk to you. You may bring Maribelle, but no one else. You understand more things than she does. Meet me behind the Grove Fair the night of graduation. I have something important to tell you.
